It would be difficult to tell the difference between peat dirt and soot,
though, because they're both black.
Wouldn't the peat wipe off with your finger and the petrochemical deposits
from the tire smoke stick more and be a bit gooey? Forest fire soot would
probably partially wipe off (smear) but leave carbon residues, but without
any goo or other texture. I'm just guessing here.
I think the lightning and rain passed
through Stockton before they got to Tracy, anyway, so the fire had to have
been started after it had already rained here.
Lucky.
Wasn't there just another huge tire fire in the Tracy area some time in
the last year? I remember that thing burned for months, also.
The news Wed night said there was another tire fire started in 1998 that
was still burning. It's small though (now).
Last night the news referred to the fire as an "envivronmental disaster."
They included the smoke in this label. Also, 2 gallons of liquid oil are
being created for each tire. 5 million tires are on fire (2 million are
not and they are being moved). All that oil is running into the local
creeks (and presumably the ground water). So far they're only testing and
not doing anything about the oil...I've heard in the past you can get
reclaimation trucks to pump the oil, which is usable.
As bad as it might get out here (and yes, I am being very very careful, as
I am severely reactant to petrochemicals), I feel horrible for those of you
in the northern Central Valley. I hope the impact for you is minimal.
