I've tasted the berries, but I can't say that they're anything to write home
about. Rather bitter, as I recall. I certainly wouldn't be tempted to make
a meal out of them. It's been a long time, but I also seem to remember that
they have a number of rather large seeds, each about the size and shape of a
lentil, and that it was very easy to tell from the 'scats' frequently
encountered on my woodland wanderings that both deer and coyotes are fond of
them. Whether they have a laxative effect, or not, I couldn't say. You
might try asking a deer or coyote!
