Moira-
I'm not familiar with your particular salvia but I do have several that have
the same tendency. I know that some salvia's can be cut back severally
without skipping a beat, however, when cutting back Salvia guaranitica I
experiences severe dieback....I'm guessing due to air entering the stem.
Now when I prune on the S. guaranitica, I am very careful not to cut more
than a few inches at a time (just the soft stem).
Another option for the single stemmed Salvia is to "pin" the plant down side
ways and each node should develop new growth. It seems to be much easier to
keep the new growth pinch than to cut the "hard" stems....less risky.
