I haven't seen or read a winter prediction lately, I guess I should...but I'm
trying to be less obsessive (passionate?) this year...
Well if another one comes and is no worse we'll be ok. I'll break my rule of not
coddling things and give the new S. madrensis some protection, and per Richard
DuFresne's advice, plant it so that I get a couple of nodes below the soil
surface. Betsy Clebsch's Salvia book lists it as hardy only to 25F so it's a bit
risky if we go down to 20F again and stay there for long. On the up side many
cold-hardy things were gorgeous this spring that are usually only ho-hum.

I'm trying it again on the asssumption that we won't have another freeze for
several years.
This is in reference to Northern California.
I have heard the weather folks are predicting another La Nina year and
therefore another hard freeze.
You might want to wait another year.
