I find that perennial sweet pea (L. latifolia) does an excellent job of
providing "extra interest" in my herbaceous peonies as well. I get at least
a few blooms on these all year from late spring to the time that frost kills
them back to the ground. They don't seem to be too heavy for the peony
stems, and they aren't as fragile as the clematis.
They might work well on a tree peony as well.
