Barbara,
You think RoundUp is expensive? The foam spray costs even more per
ounce! I bought RoundUp foam spray because the foam made it obvious
which weeds had been treated, although now that I am removing the
flowers as I go, marking the weeds is unnecessary.
My guess is that RoundUp is popular because it has a safer image,
whether or not it's deserved. At the local nursery they said that it
disappears quickly, so you can plant/sow sooner. They also claimed that
commercial farmers RoundUp because its short life means food crops don't
absorb any dangerous chemicals. If retailers promote these beliefs, the
consumer will feel a lot more comfortable using RoundUp.
Another factor: the name RoundUp sounds more benign than Eliminator,
Spectracide, or any name with -cide or killer in it.
Thanks for telling me about Eliminator and Spectracide. RoundUp is
not getting the job done; the surface of the beds is covered with weed
seedlings. Those, I'll deal with by cultivating with a scuffle hoe.
Better to eliminate weeds manually, although I confess to needing
occasional help from a can.
Janet
