Entangled plants

I'm trying to get rid of chickweed and other creeping weeds, but
they are entangled with the creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood
Purple'). I've already damaged or pulled out some of the good with the
bad.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this situation? It's taught me
that next year I must deal with the creeping weeds right away; it's hard
to find the base clump when the stems are this long. As for the current
tangled mess, I think it would be easier to dig up the whole thing and
separate them clump by clump at the soil line. They're blooming now,
though; should I wait until the bloom is over? That means that the weeds
will have seeded, too.
