topsoil for a new lawn and garden

I am leaving my house and garden of the past 30 years and moving to a newly
constructed house not too far away. The soil in this area, Lafayette
Indiana, is an awful heavy clay. My old perennial beds have been amended
with compost so often that the soil is now rich and fertile. For the new
house I am having the dirt from the excavation hauled away to be replaced
with top soil or black dirt. The question is, what is a good amount (in
inches) of top soil or black dirt to have brought in for the new yard?
Since the entire yard (excluding the house, driveway, etc) is only about
7,500 sq ft, I was planning to have a uniform coverage of topsoil for lawn
and the areas with flower beds and shrubs.
