Re: topsoil for a new lawn and garden


Well, Howard, when we specify that a contractor install top soil, the
minimum is 6".  I'd say that was min. and you can go deeper if you
can afford it.   When you do buy in soil, buy it from a company that
specializes in this and will certify the mix..they do exist; use your
yellow pages.  You can specify any mix you want of any type of soils
available.  Watch out for silty soil.  I once bought quite a bit and
told them I wanted x percent of coarse sand added.  Was assured that
the soil was already sandy.  Well, it was, but in the form of fine,
silty sand.  Lovely black stuff - fluffy as all get out when
delivered; rich and when moist very workable. BUT when that stuff
dries out, it would rival concrete in consistency.

Topsoil ain't cheap, so make durn sure you get what you want.
