Hi Claire: Is Northhill open to the public? Would love to do a couple days
touring Vermont Gardens and this is supposed to be a winner. I know Joe
Eck(?) write architectural type articles for Horticulture magazine...
Any other Vermont aboretums or gardens?
Thanx, Walter Cullerton, Bucks County,Pa >>

Dear Walt,

I am pleased to tell you that Northhill is open three days each summer, the
last day of June,July and August. You must write for a ticket which is free.
You arrive at a church closeby and a van takes you to the garden. The van
runs all day and the operation is staffed by:

AIDS Project of Southern Vermont
Northhill Garden
Box 1486
Brattleboro, VT 05302

Use that address for the tickets and enclose a SASE. Ask for which month you
want to visit. You can stay all day if you wish, the owners are usually in
the garden.
A donation to the Project is asked for and you will find it a small price for
a great day. There are visitors all day but not usually a mob so it is
pleasant trip.

The month you choose will have what is in bloom that period of the summer.
There is impressive stonework on the hillside garden done by the owners.

The van system came about when the town and neighbors became upset with all
the parking on the narrow road. If you do not receive good directions (and I
think you will) write to me and I will tell you how to arrive right on the
spot.

Also, write to the University of Vermont for their list of other open gardens
and nurseries in vermont. Northhill is closeby Olallie Gardens of Siberian
iris and hemerocallis fame. Olallie Gardens is now a full perennial nursery.
You can dig plants right in the fields if you wish.

Driving south from the Vermont sites you can also visit Blue Meadow Nursery
(our favorite owned and operated by plant collectors) and Andrews Nursery.
These are in the Northhampton, Mass area.

This area is all an easy drive from my house and I can give you further tips
if you like. Write privately.
