This is a good question. All our beds are mulched, which for our
close-up city gardens definitely give an attractive look. We use
different kinds of mulch in different areas, however, so very fine pine
bark or cocoa shells go in the beds where seeders are wanted or where I
tend to replant and move things a lot, and other areas get a heavier
mulch where it doesn't matter as much. But the mulch in either case is
not very thick - maybe an inch, 2 at the most, so seedlings do
occasionally pop up where I don't expect 'em. Some things just don't
reseed for me - like digitalis and garlic chives :-( Corydalis lutea
would reseed in 3 feet of mulch, I'm sure.
