Yes, I have tried them with both good news and bad news.
If they are in greenhouse or indoor plants in the cold months, they lend
themselves to root rots of all kinds. They are death to bulbs. These
crystals in container plants prevent drainage for plants requiring good
drainage. They are also bad news to seedlings or cuttings as you cannot
control the moisture in the pots. They should never be used around succulent
plants.
Outdoors, I have not noticed enough difference to invest in more material.
The newest crystals are biodegradable, being a corn by product so should be
safe. The cystals marked acrylic might behave differently, I have not
purchased those. I have noticed that some growers are shipping plants in
plastic wrappings of water impregnated crystals. I think the use of the
crystals should be the deciding factor. By the end of the growing season,
the crystals have disappeared so that does not seem to be a problem.
A good question for more experiences. Unless purchased in large quantities,
they are fairly expensive in garden centers.
Children love this product. Added to the sandpile it is a magic element.
