Fwd: THE WIRED GARDENER #27, April 3, 2002

Here is a monthly newsletter from PennHortSoc for those living in the
Delaware Valley area. Later they will list all the plant sales as well as
the meetings.

It is free. How to borrow special books from PHS is also detailed in this
newsletter. They have a great booksale in the summer if yu can get there.

I have received this for while and found many interesting items for those not
close by. I do wish I was closer - living in this area, there are many
events and many non-profit sales to enrich your garden.

Libraries Like Ours

Since April is National Library Month, we offer a coast-to-coast virtual tour
of libraries like ours -- ones that focus on landscape or gardening
information and are part of plant societies, botanical gardens, arboretums,
and universities.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Library's collection can be accessed through
"Linnaeus", its online catalog. Included are links to electronic sites of
horticultural, botany, and plant science journals.
http://www.bbg.org/lib/index.html

Continue north to visit the Montreal Botanical Garden library:
http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/jardin/en/biblio/biblio.htm
This information-rich site includes "Green Pages", a series of gardening
topics such as butterfly gardening, tree pruning, and house plant care. Even
more topics await you when you cliquez to the French version.

For garden history information, consult the Smithsonian Library's Archives of
American Gardens. http://www.si.edu/horticulture/res_ed/AAG/home.htm

The Herb Society of America Library is located adjoining the Holden Arboretum
near Cleveland, Ohio. Its collection contains over 2,500 items about herbs
and herb gardening. Items may be borrowed by members of the Society, and
will be mailed for a fee. The Herb Society library is open to visitors.
http://www.herbsociety.org/library/index.html

If you're visiting San Francisco, visit the Helen Crocker Russell Library at
the Strybing Arboretum. Although the collection is non-circulating, the
library is open to the public with a spacious reading room, complete with
slide viewer, VCR, and photocopiers.
http://www.strybing.org/library/index.html

Northward on the Pacific coast, check out the offerings of the Miller Library
of Seattle's Center for Urban Horticulture at http://www.millerlibrary.org
See especially its excellent "Gardening on the Internet" tutorial -- a
well-designed step-by-step listing of gardening web resources, some of which
are specific to the Pacific Northwest while others suite North American
gardeners.

This is a sampling of horticultural and botanical libraries, all of whom are
members of the Council of Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (CBHL).
Membership is open to individuals interested in botanical and horticultural
literature as well as institutions. A list of member libraries is on the CBHL
web site: http://huntbot.andrew.cmu.edu/CBHL/CBHL.html
