The first 'Hawera' daffodil, my favorite, opened its eyes today. The soft
lemon yellow is exactly the same color as the fresh new leaves of Lamium
'Beedham's White', and they make patches of sunshine on the woodland garden
floor. The bloodroot are just past, as is Erythronium dens-canis 'Rose
Queen', a big name for a small flower. But the Virginia bluebells are
opening and there are buds on the Erythronium 'Pagoda'. The Polemonium
reptans is also very close to bloom, and the Witloof chicory like tops of a
variegated Solomon's Seal is peeking out. It's all especially appreciated
after last Sunday's heavy, wet snow--about 15 inches of it. It was the most
snow at one time of the whole winter; I lost power for 36 hours and had to
camp in the living room by the emergency propane heater. Tuesday was
warmish. Wednesday almost 70, and today it's over 80. Ah, spring.
