Re: Phormium and Heuchera 'Amber Waves'

I would feed them some very weak water solubles fertilizer at this stage. But take that with a grain of salt as I haven't grown Phormiums from seed. Which I think I would like to try some time.

I do grow phormiums in pots just not long term for the big guys so they don't get real huge. Sorry I wasn't clear there. While they are in the pot I put in a slow release fertilizer and never let the pots dry out. When they go in the greenhouse I clean them up a bit. In the spring I trim up any ratty leaves and plant them out in the garden. The smaller ones the root system is pretty dense the second year in a pot, so carefully break up the top of the soil to add more time released ferts and add fresh soil.By the third or fourth year they are ready to lift them in the spring and divide them and repot them up. Granted this is only my fourth year of growing them and a third year of growing some in pots so I don't feel I have it totally down pat, although so far it is working.

I think they are worth growing in containers in colder climates. Heronswood carries quite a few varieties, but not sure if with shipping they would still be too spendy but the selection is nice.

Yes, I was quite surprised, Debbie, when they germinated white. I
have no clue if it's normal, but they all came up that way. I had
sown 8 seeds and 6 germinated, so that's pretty good percentage wise.
They just seem to be sitting there, tho'...and I'm not sure what to
do for or to them except say encouraging words:-)
