My take, Marilyn, is that it is an emotional issue. Deer are
beautiful animals and the fawns are about as cute as they come...it's
the bambi syndrome....how can you shoot bambi?
Also, part of the problem is the large numbers that live in highly
populated areas where it is really difficult, from a safety
standpoint, to have hunts. But, I think the largest issue is the
massive protests that seem to always happen (at least around here)
when a hunt to thin herds is announced.
I was not a fan of deer hunting until they became such a problem.
But, now, given what I've heard from those who've been involved in
researching the issue, it appears that thinning herds is the only
means of keeping the numbers under control. They have no natural
predators in most of their range now - except the automobile - but
they breed as though they were surrounded by packs of wolves and
hungry mountain lions!
They are eating themselves out of house and home and destroying the
woodlands in the process. They don't migrate, so they just eat until
food in their territory is gone and then they starve.
IMO, it's a major problem that has not found an answer that is either
acceptable to the general public or financially feasible for
government agencies. Trying birth control methods has not proven
effective and costs the earth. Relocation doesn't work because they
panic and damage themselves, plus, where is there a place that
doesn't have too many deer now in the first place?
