Hi Barb,Well, before we get scolded for not sticking to perennials - I have a BIG problem in my flower (?) bed that backs up to a small woods. Virginia Creeper is really creeping all over the place - the more I pull it up, the more it seems to respond by spreading. Does anyone have any ideas for a selective poison?
I've had luck with brush killer. Not really a selective poison, but it is the only thing I've found to work. I don't know if all brush killers work the same way, but the one I use (Round Up) will only kill the plants that have their foliage sprayed. It is one that neutralizes when it comes in contact with soil so it won't migrate that way to other plants. It is also one that you don't see overnight results. It can take up to two weeks before you notice the effect.
Just reread your message and see it is in an established bed. Get out some plastic and either cover the good plants or make a sort of collar/shute/funnel to put around the Creeper. Then use a small spray bottle and carefully spray.
I have fought Virginia Creeper, also. Pulling can work to a point, but if you don't get all of the roots and underground runners, it will pop up again. At least it has for me.
Good luck,
Karen
