salvia guarantica

I just bought the "black and blue" hybrid of the salvia guarantica (5
feet tall and attracts hummingbirds? Sounds fabulous!) and am wondering
if I can grow it in a large clay pot or if it will get too large. It is
considered an annual here(zone 5b), I guess, and I know sometimes the
size information isn't accurate for more northerly zones because of
shorter day lengths. Our summers are hot, however, and can be very
muggy. Has anyone grown it in my zone either as an annual or as a
perennial with mulch or special treatment? The Web images make it look
really gorgeous.
