I find that here in z7, Paul tho' it's not so much winter oriented. 
I love the fancy leaf sorts, but find that if you don't lift and
replant, not only deeper but in freshly amended soil, they sort of
peter out after a couple of years.  Think, myself, it has to do with
the breeding or maybe it's the TC propagating?  Something.  They are
not really tough plants.  Some are not as hardy as others, either,
because of the breeding lines used.
