I would remove the worst leaves, and leave the plants alone. You can do more
damage by doing clean up. Remember the big oil spill in Alaska a few years
ago, were the clean up did more harm to the environment than the oil did or
would have.
In time it will break down, but clean up any areas were large spills occurred.
