Vivien,
I've never grown it, but here's a post from Hubert Agback from
Alpine-L about it that may be of interest:
"Symphyandra species are mostly perennial but may appear monocarpic
in gardens or
are at least short-lived. Propagation by seed is thus necessary
unless the
plants self sow.
Be sure to ascertain that your plant truly is the elusive S.
zangezura, as this
name is often usurped by S. armena. S. zangezura is very easy to
distinguish
from other species of Symphyandra, as it is the only one with
geranium-like
leaves and nearly rotate (starry, not campanulate) flowers. I have
searched for
it for over ten years but always got S. armena instead.
It grows naturally in rock crevices (in Caucasus, Armenia) and surely
will like
sharp drainage but still not bone dry during the growing season. I
would also
try it in a sand bed."
Hubert is in Sweden, so I would imagine if he can grow this species,
you should be able to, but note what he says about drainage....seems
it is fussy.
Bone dry here - driest March on record - and it should NOT be on the
east coast. Makes me worry what summer will be like!
