This hydrangea flowers on the previous year's growth, so pruning should
occur right after flowering or else no blooms will appear. It's kind
of a shame -- the one in my yard (zone 5b USDA) dies back to the ground
each year, so I can't ever expect any blooms. But the foliage is nice!
Here's a general pruning schedule for the more common hydrangeas:
Hydrangea arborescens late fall/early spring
Hydrangea macrophylla after flowering
Hydrangea paniculata late fall/early spring
Hydrangea quercifolia after flowering
