Hydrangea macrophylla variegata

dNumber one I don't know how to post   Am I doing it right?

I have a question, although not technically a perennail but a perennial
shrub, I want to know when and if one prunes hydrangea variegata?   I
understand that if you do it at thewrong time of year you get now bloom.
Other hydrangeas I prune now, but this one, I am told is tricky.  Any input?
I'm in Zone 7A, eastern Long Isladn, NY
