Re: roses & pine trees

I have several roses planted under and near my pines. The ones that
don't get much sun are stalky and slow-growing, but then, they're also
very young. In general, they're doing fine. My climbing Blue Girl
has about five huge blossoms, and it's about 5 feet tall, up 2 feet
from last year (I'm not much into pruning). The climbing Pinata is
also tall, but very thin, and only has one flower so far. I planted
them both at the same time, and the Blue Girl gets more sun. I live
in USDA Zone 9, SF Bay Area. Avril Tolley

Hi, I am thinking of moving an arbor to a new spot in a semi-circle of pine
trees on my property. It looks very nice with the white arbor against the
green trees, but I am not sure if I will be able to plant my old fashioned
climbing roses so close to the pines. Does anyone have any experience with
this? The area gets sun for about 3/4 of the day. If not roses are there
any other things that would grow in a spot like this?
I live in the thumb of Michigan. I'm not sure what zone.
