Re: coconut fiber blocks

Patty:

You will find the fiber to be a superior product to peat for a variety of
reasons.

1. Peat is extremely resistant to water and, in fact, can wick water away
from the plants' root systems.

2. Peat is a potential hazard to your lungs. The fine powders cause many
professional nurserys to require workers use face masks for protection.

3. Peat is, for all practical purposes, not a renewable resource. Instead,
it requires vast acreages of wetlands to produce the product.

4. Ann Lovejoy, Tony Avent (Plant Delights) and other figures strongly
recommend against the use of peat except in very limited situations.

5. The coconut fiber alternative works very well and, so far as I know, does
not have any of the above problems.
