Re: What to plant?
Dear Karen:
Welcome to the cliff gardener group. Find a few bundles of several
heights of survey stakes. Look at your hill from various view angles.
Make sketches. Put a stake where you feel you need height say from the
bottom of the slope. Then look at the stake's placement in terms of
your other views.
After some of this contemplation you'll get a feel for your slope.
Take survey stakes and make a non erosion work path through the hill.
Generally I play with meandering switchbacks. You'll want to have hand
reach access to each and every part of your hill without stepping on
your new nice soil for plants .
You've now have a framework for your eventual planting areas. You
can buy time by planting a wildflower mix or a clover like my favorite,
Crimson. Don't give the weeds an opportunity or you'll have a mess.
Or you could start your permanent planting. As to plants you've
already chosen the type with your " I want to get it planted in
something that would require little maintenance and could tolerate
full sun and sometimes little water." Go to the North American Rock
Garden Society home page
http://www.nargs.org/
You'll find wonderful hyperlinks to more articles. A slope makes an
ideal rock garden. You'll be able to concentrate a good number of
plants.
Good luck.
Best, Vicki
