Well I have fairly good sandy loam soil here in my garden - I live in North Wales(UK). It does tend to dry out too much in the summer of course when we get little rain - but that doesn't happen too often. I think ideal soil doesn't exist!! The best bit in the garden is the old vegetable patch which has rich dark soil (I'm told this indicates generations of gardeners using 'night soil' from the old style earth toilets) The earth toilet is still here in it's outhouse although unused since about 1970's when they put in plumbing! I use the more conventional cow maunre and homegrown compost to enrich the soil and improve it's moisture retention.
I'd better go before I start complaining about the windy exposed spot I garden in - Gardeners are never satisfied!
