Re: Raised beds

Good evening, --

Thanx for all the advice. Rocks sound great but a lot more work than I think
I can handle. Altho cheaper if you have a source for rocks at the right
price. I live on a creek & probably could find plenty of rocks but I don't
think I'm that ambitious.

Also, I think lumber would be neater & take up less space. Measuring again
today with boards & levels, I think I can make 4 terraces about 6-8 feet wide
& 20 feet long, dropping each about 10".

Cedar, as Dale suggested, isn't available in the width I want to use (2"x10").
Ideally I would like to use 1 board across it. I checked prices at Lowe's &
Menard's today - treated lumbar 2"x10"x20 feet would cost me nearly $30.00!!!!
Which brings me to another question - Would treated lumber release as much
toxins as landscape timbers?? I plan to have a narrow walkway on the downside
of the lumber so it wouldn't be directly next to my vegetables.

What worries me even more right now is that it looks like I will have to bring
in a load of dirt, at least. I live on a curve in the road which makes my lot
sort of pie-shaped with the back yard much larger. So there isn't enough room
to bring the dirt back to the garden area with a truck. I will have to haul
it down in a wheel-barrow. Maybee, I should plan on doing only one terrace
this year & see how it goes. If I order 8 tons, I think it will take me 320
trips with the wheel-barrow down the hill to the garden!!!

My main reason for doing this is because my garden area is always too wet to
work for early planting items & makes everything so late. What I have now is
clay which holds the moisture & I am hoping the black dirt will drain better
especially if its terraced.

Do you think that what I am proposing will drain enough better to justify all
this work & expense???

Thanx again for your advice!
