RE: Rosemary question
I'm always interested in traditional beliefs about plants, how plants
got their names, etc. Rosemary, as you all probably know, is
supposed to have been the plant that the Virgin Mary laid her blue
cloak on to dry and so its flowers have been blue ever since. Less
commonly known is a traditional belief that a rosemary plant
will never get taller than Jesus was when he was alive. Six feet
would have been an impressive height for a man of that time but of
course there are theological considerations. . .
On an HGTV show, I saw a segment about a gardener who has built a
special controlled environment for rosemary. It's like a tall,
one-plant greenhouse. His goal is to see how tall rosemary can grow,
because of his interest in the traditional link between rosemary and
Jesus. As I recall, all the plants have died back at around five
feet.
