I just thought that I would let those who are interested know that last
year, I bought "The Canadian Plant Sourcebook" by Anne and Peter
Ashley out of Ottawa and it has been a great resource. You look up the
plant that you're looking for (they have whole sections on iris,
hemerocallis, lilium, paeonia, perennials, roses, shrubs/trees/vines) and it
will tell you which nursery in Canada carries it. It describes each
nursery (i.e. address/phone/fax #, whether they sell retail/wholesale/mail
order, if there is a minimum $ for orders, whether they use organic
methods, whether they ship to the U.S. and whether they have a
catalogue or not (listing if you have to pay for it or not) ).
The only thing that they stress in the book is to please not approach
(beg?! If any of you are like me, sometimes you become d-e-s-p-e-r-a-t-e
for a certain plant) nurseries who specifically list that they DO NOT mail
order to make an exception for you..... this just discourages future
participation by the nursery in this wonderful book. The 96/97 edition of
the book listed 22,000 plants and had the participation of 150 nurseries.
They seem to publish a new edition of the book each year. To contact
them, their phone number is (613) 730-0755 and email is
apashley@worldlink.ca. They sell printed copies of their handbook as
well as say that you can enquire about an electronic version. I believe
that the book was under $20.
