Duncan, I've tried some of your suggestions, but (believe it or not),
some of my favorite local places are not yet on the Web. Haven't
checked this out, but the following book is recommended by Horticulture
magazine:
*** If you are searching for a specific plant, we recommend Source List
of Plants and Seeds, 4th ed., 1996 (Andersen Horticultural Library,
Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, 3675 Arboretum Dr., Box 39,
Chanhassen, MN 55317; $34.95 ppd. paperback).***

I find the Web useful as a posting device (such as this group) to get
input from other gardeners on where to find specific plants. I've
ordered & received 6 new plant catalogs this season from tips from
other gardeners. As more nurseries get online, this will probably get
easier. Also (again a print resource), Horticulture's Resources list
in each issue gives nurseries that supply featured plants. If their
entire archive were on line, this would be great, but so far they have
only Jan - April of this year (at hortmag.com).
