For the early springs and Pomegranite trees ... I miss Albuquerque! It is
snowing (6" so far) right now! I have 2 Broadtailed Hummers drinking from the
feeder and hiding in the Rocky Mountain Juniper to keep dry. Yesterday it was
cloudy with a few drops of rain here and there, but still quite warm. I have
some cultivated plants.... Iris reticulata (spelling?), grape hyacinths and
various daffodils blooming under this snow! Last year we had 3 feet of snow on
April 25th, so I suppose I should not complain. This was not unexpected as no
Indian Paintbrush or Penstemon strictus has sent up a single blooming stalk.
The Dwarf Lousewort and Gold Smoke Fumitory have been blooming in the woods,
but nothing else. Our weather is variable in the extreme... in all 4 seasons.
Albuquerque has water easily available... we haul our water and store it in a
cistern, though we hope to buy a well share sometime soon.
For the woods, mountains and climate... there is no place like home. I have
"German Bearded" Iris planting projects (to be planted in clearings in the
woods and in the meadow) going... reforestation (not that we lack trees) to
speed up the replacement of the Ponderosas logged off about 100 years ago.
There is a hedgerow going (woody plants/shrubs take several years to get going
too!), fruit trees and a pond going in to provide water to the wildlife and
more fun for me. The Datura has always been a favorite... and I may be able to
winter it over with "rose-cones." I do not grow roses that require special
treatment.... Rugosas and other species roses... I might be willing to baby
some Datura through the winter though. I have seeds from Datura that is
reliably hardy at about 6000 feet elevation. I hope to work with some of these
to establish a truly hardy D. metaloides. I also have some seed (D.
metaloides) from Albuquerque (a true perennial there)... the color was more
purple than usual... I would like to see it stabilized and reliably
purple/violet before trying to mix them... tests will have to be done on
rooted cuttings to test for hardiness. I wish I had more time for all of this.
This will take years....
Blessings of the Bursting Season!
