Re: Queen Anne's Lace (Wild carrot)
To me, Queen Anne's Lace is one of those "beauty is in the eye of" plants,
and unfortunately, while the beauty tends to escape my own eye (perhaps it
just because there are so many of them along the roadsides here in the
upper midwest), I have always been intrigued by the small dark purple
flower in the exact center of the flowering head of Queen Anns's lace.
It's not that obvious, tut if you look carefully, you can usually see it.
Being a biologist, I've often wondered, how this might have developed and
what possible selective advantage this could possibly be to the plant
(perhaps there is none), and also, how the infloresence would look if all
the flowers in the head were this same deep purple. Has anyone else ever
noticed this?
Happy Easter everyone!
