Hell Bill Lee,
Pulsatilla or Pasque Flowers are beginning to gain popularity outside of
the Rock Gardening groups. I am always on the look-out for a new one to try
in the garden.
Here in my garden I find a touch of shade helps the bloom color and the
length the bloom lasts. Well drained soil with reasonable fertility, but
not super rich, is best. The well drained part is important to prevent
crown rot so I like to dig in some pea gravel when planting. Also use them
to hide the holes in concrete blocks I have used for a raised bed.
There are many species to play with and quite a few hybrids out there
now... available mostly by seed.. but a few specialty nurseries carry the
plants. Look around for some of the cut-petal forms in any color you can
obtain.
The foliage has white hairs all over it when emerging and some species
keep the white hair. The seed pod develops long whispy trailers like an old
man's beard and is qute nice after the blooms. Foliage is almost evergreen
if they are not allowed to dry out in late summer.
Several are in bloom now in the garden along with phlox and primula.
