Upside-down roots?

Have been enjoying this list for a while now, but have a question perhaps
you can help with.

We got some bare root astilbe and dicentra (common bleeding heart). When we
went to plant them, it said the astilbe should be planted with soil just
covering the eyes. Went through our many gardening books and found
references to crowns, but no photos. So we planted it with the pointy end
to the bottom and what looks like roots, trailers, or perhaps "eyes"
nearest the top. Yes? No?

Then the bleeding heart......it was a flat mass of roots, with no obvious
top or bottom. So we just planted it ......not knowing if it is upside-down.

If we have to dig these out and replant, we need to do it soon. Anyone who
can explain the top and bottoms of these roots please respond???

THANKS so much!!!!
