Here in zone 9 butterfly bush doesn't always die down in winter. All
varieties except one should be cut back in the early spring, since the plant
blooms only on new wood. The common butterfly bushes you see in the
nurseries are like this. There is one variety that I know of that blooms
differently and should not be cut back, but I don't remember the variety name
and don't have my books with me. In colder climates, Mother Nature takes
care of the cutting back for us!
