I wouldn't be without pineapple sage, Salvia elegans. Its red blossoms come
very late in the season (If your season is too short, you might miss out
altogether) and its foliage has the most incredible pineapple scent. I grow
it in a protected spot close to the south side of the house to encourage
blossoming and occasionally it even winter over. (It didn't this year, so I
just bought a new one today.) This year I'm experimenting with some other
salvias which will probably not be winter-hardy, so maybe I'll find some new
favorites. Last year I had a Salvia leucantha which had the most awesome
purple fuzzy buds and wish I had some this year.
