Re: Damping Off and various germination problems

Nita,
I prefer to start seeds without using the humidity domes I find that they
hold too much humidity and promote spindly growth (along with lack of
light). The use of bottom heat is a requirement (I germinate my seeds in my
basement) for me when geminating seeds you want to keep the tops cool which
will help with stockiness but the media at 65 to 75 degrees F. for most
plants. Use lights from day one keep them about 2" above the plants and on
for about 16 hours /day. For plants that require darkness to germinate I
just cover the pots with a couple layers of brown paper. Use a seed
starting media and not standard "potting soil". If sowing seeds in
community pots transplant to individual cell as soon as the first true
leaves appear though I sometimes transplant before they appear. If plants
are kept in crowded pots too long they may get spindly. You want to keep
the plants stocky from initial germination because it is impossible to make
a leggy seedling into a vigorous plant. Hope that this helps.
