For those who can't bear to throw away a plant, have you ever thought about
donating them to your local elementary school/daycare as part of a learning
garden? How about a retirement center? Do you have any elderly neighbors
who would take care of it if it was in a large pot (easier to reach)? Here
where I work, we have a "trash" garden on our back property along the
security fence. Any plant that no one wants from their garden at home goes
there. As a bonus, we get to harvest the blooms for fresh arrangements in
the office.

I, too, am softhearted when it comes to excess plants. I've given them to
relatives and friends, but my daughter has carried things to her teachers
at school and also the daycare. And there's the garden at work that I
mentioned above. I find that I look forward to spring so that I can divide
out my plants and swap them for new ones from friends and co-workers. I've
even read in magazines that some people have given them out as party favors
in cute pots with growing instructions. What a wonderful reminder of a
good party!

I have a rugosa rose that is acting like Medusa this year. Suckers are
coming up everywhere!! I think I'm going to send one to work, one to my
sister-in-law who is going to give birth in July...
