Re: Damping Off and various germination problems


	Nita, another thing that helps a bit to prevent damping off is to
sprinkle a little bit of turkey or chicken grit (buy it at feed stores) on
top of the seeding pots to keep the crowns of the young sprouts from being
too moist.
	For perennial seedlings, cool temps (around 55 F) and air
circulation (a small fan in the seedling area and tip the top of the plastic
dome open a bit) along with good artificial light (12-16 hours a day,
depending on the plants) are the best preventatives.  You can use antifungal
solutions like Captan or Benomyl, but I don't like chemicals of any kind
myself...
	BTW, I don't know if it made a difference or not, but I always
germinated impatiens seeds under a layer of the blue plastic that is sold in
school supply counters for report covers--something about limiting the
spectrum rather than providing complete darkness...always got great
germination.
