RE: Corydalis flexuosa - 'Blue Panda'

Hi Bill, Its hard to believe that a plant from the mountains of China
wouldn't be hardy in much of the USA isn't it? It grows very well here in
my zone 8b garden, but I agree that it does go dormant in the heat. Folks
think it is dead and hack the roots out. It usually begins growing in late
Feb here and blooming by April until it gets hot. Then it rests, but will
reappear and bloom again when the cooler temps and fall rains begin. I grow
mine in a north facing bed that gets hand watered because it is under the
eaves of my house. I do think they need consistent water to survive. Both
'China Blue' and 'Purple Leaf' put on enough growth that I can divide them
every year. Sometimes when a plant is too much of a struggle, it is better
to just enjoy it in someone else's garden! ;+)

I knew that, Heather, but these didn't just go dormant--they croaked, within
a month after planting. And none have ever been seen again. My corydalis
elata is up, as I expected it would be and I hope to see it bloom this year.
And C. lutea, which is naturalized in my woods, has also decided to grow in
one of my daffodil beds. I'll leave it there until it becomes a nuisance--I
like the foliage in particular. But I don't think I'll try Blue Panda again
unless someone discovers its secret needs.
