Thanks for the comments, Marilyn. I suspect you are right about the water.
When it gets dry here, all my plants have to make it on their own because the
cistern is my source of water and in drought-like conditions I don't have
water to give them. I will try a plant twice before giving up on it. So I
am resigned to admiring 'Blue Panda' and 'China Blue' in other people's
gardens.
