Re: freesia

I've grown it for 10 years in the windowsill in winter. I started with 1
bulb and now have 4 10" pots crammed with the offspring (and a nice
bouquet on the desk here). I tried it here in MO zone 6 in summer
outdoors and they fried in our heat, so now I confine my efforts to the
winter window.
What I do is to pot the bulbs in September and start watering, and place
in a south window. I use one of those wire garden hoops in a 6" diameter,
24" high size in each pot, since the plants grow tall and need staking.
Keep fed and watered and they should begin bloom in mid February, going
for about 6 weeks. I cut the blooms since the pots aren't attractive in
themselves, but the bouquets are gorgeous. Keep watering until the
foliage yellows and dies, about May, and then dry off and remove the
foliage. Keep pots dry until Sept, divide the bulbs, repot and begin
again.
