Rose Suckers (the pun is just too much!)

Actually, the rose I was referring to is an own-root rugosa, which are
known to sucker quite extensively in gardens it likes. It is a 'Therese
Bugnet'. Beautiful red canes in the winter and a main flush of soft pink
fragrant blooms in spring, with sporatic re-bloom if conditions are right
for it. I have several more rugosas, but none have spread like this one.

Unfortunately a lot of hybrid tea roses are grafted onto much hardier stock
(thus Nan's warning!). I dislike these roses because they require so much
time to fool with (i.e., spraying for blackspot, bugs, mildew, etc) that
I've reverted to roses that require little care. Rugosas are so hardy and
care-free that they are almost always sold own-root. I've never seen
otherwise, but I suppose some nursery out there may be the exception.
