Paul and others:
I second your description of the malva seedlings. I have horrible luck
trying to keep the "mother" plant alive for more than two years. I've
taken to transplanting the seedlings instead, of which there are a few
(five this year). These seedlings have grown mightily! They start out
pale green with very ruffled leaves and eventually the leaves get darker
and larger.
The seedlings you are talking about might be from your neighborhood trees.
There is one particular tree whose seeds will root in any bare spot it can
find in my garden. All summer long I'm pulling seedlings from it. I never
pull them until I'm sure that it's that d*mn tree; but by then the little
stem has already started to become woody and it's difficult to pull out
sometimes. It has small dark green leaves for a long time and eventually
it will get pale green leaves similar to the malva's. The only way I can
tell that it's not a malva is that it is much taller than a malva seedling
when these leaves form and the stem is getting woody.
