nastys and 4 oclocks

neither of which are perennials but sure act like they are in my area (USDA
Z8/Sunset Z 6)
I use nastys to cover compost piles while I am building up new gardens.
After all my kids and their many friends and cars finally grew up and left
home, I wanted to reclaim part of my driveway back to lawn and garden..it was
about 40' wide at this point and had been graveled in.
I selected a long area and composted, left clippings and lawn debris there for
about 5 years, layering every year with steer and dirt.
I would throw in some nasty seeds early spring and by May the whole thing
would be in bloom..much ,more attractive than the compost pile.
I still would put clippings and compost on top of the nastys..they just grew
thru it.
They reseed so easily (as do the scourge of Oregon, 4 O'clocks) that now I
still have them in the new pretty perennial bed..thats ok.
I did discover that fertilizing nastys causes great healthy leaves but few flowers.
