I'm intrigued by the comments on bleaching plants that are "sick" with
dilute bleach -- what plants does this work on, how do you define "sick,"
and how do you think it works -- or maybe the last quesiton is better
stated as 'what does the bleach do'?

Bleach is a a very toxic chemical to most fungi and many bacteria.
It is a very effective sterilizer. If a plant has rot on it's roots, bleach
can be used to "dissolve" away the dead tissue and kill of bacteria that are
feeding on the area.
The proper mixture of bleach for use with plants is 10-15 percentage house
hold bleach to warm water. Soak for a few minutes and then rinse. This works
too for pots and garden tools.
