RE: Perennials for Dry Shade

Hi all,

other plants I have had success with in dry SEMI-shade (and keep in mind
this is not in deep, dark shade, and I never leave my plants to their own
devices -- they all get some supplemental summer water):

Aronia (a shrub) (cokeberry)
Musk roses (with supplemental water)
Oak leaf hydrangea (hydrangea quercifolia)
Joe Pye weed (eupatorium)
Euphorbia polychroma
Tulips (love the dry areas)
Aconitum (monkshood)
Chleone (turtlehead)
Vinca (of course)
Daylilies
Valerian officinalis
Calminthia
Viburnum opulus compactum
viburnum carlesii
Hellebore (orientalis and corsican)
Many spring bulbs love these conditions
Hosta (definitely needs some summer water under trees)
Perennial geraniums
Iris

This year I am experimenting with oriental poppies there -- so far they look
great.

I have two really large trees in my yard so these plants all tolerate the
root competition as well, as long as the soil level is raised somewhat. In
the *worst* places where the roots are impossible, I just stick a big pot
over that and grow somethings in that. Gives some nice height variation
that way as well!

Both my locations are different - one gets shade most of the day and then
lots of hot end of the day sun and the other gets morning light and a little
late light.

Bottom line is: push the envelope as much as you can. Some things needs
staking, extra water, pruned so they don't flop but still flower, etc. And
limb up your trees as much as possible!

For mine is just a little old fashioned garden where the
flowers come together to praise the Lord and teach all
who look upon them to do likewise.

I AM in shape. ROUND is a shape!
