Using Roundup on brambles

I'm cursed with what seems like acres of brambles, and would like to use 
Roundup to help get rid of them.  I seem to get mixed directions on how to do 
this--now that they're turning green, do I just spray them?  And then what?  
Cut them back after they die?  Uproot them altogether?  If I use Roundup, how 
long before I can replant something like ivy in the same area?
