Walnut Confusion

Lisa thanks so much for the walnut URL..it has really helped a lot in the
consideration of what to plant under what I believe to be a California Walnut
tree rather than an Black Walnut. native to the east coast of the USA.and
there in lies some confusion.
I have read the California Walnuts do not secrete the intense juglone that
Black walnuts do, but I am not really sure how to find out specifically what
type of tree I have and if that information is true.
Also, I am considering a raised bed around the wlanut..raising the soil level
by bringing in topsoil, about 3 feet..the tree sits atop a shallow lower soil
line and would not, itself, be amongst the raised bed.
Were I to add the 3 feet of new soil, would the plants in that bed be
eventually exposed to the potential juglone?
I ask because what is being considered here is a collection of Rhodies, Roses
and underplantings of bulbs and some native plants.
Rhodie buying season is upon me soon and the dirt (topsoil and mushroom
compost) is scheduled to be delivered next week.
I thought I had done all my homework but now am a bit insecure as to whether
or not I should take the chances with this tree.
I did leaf comparisons out of my primary gardening book (Sunset Western
Gardening) but would be happy to check out any other references someone might
offer, or research url's.
The area is at the entrance to my driveway and las long been just a grassy
overgrown and unappealing sight. I have finished a large perennial raised bed
on the other side of the driveway and want to compliment it but not
particularly duplicate it, and I would like some less labor intensive beds,
thus the larger plantings of Rhodies and Roses, which grow so well here in the
Pacific Northwest.
So..any more help out there ?
